A 36C is a wide band with a mid-range cup letter. Reading the letter on its own understates it, because a C on a 36 band is a considerably larger cup than a C on a 30.
Skip the arithmetic with our bra size calculator, which returns sister sizes as well.
What a 36C measures
Indian band sizing is your underbust rounded up to an even number plus four inches. A 36 band is therefore cut for an underbust of about 31 to 32 inches.
The letter is the difference between bust and band. C is two to three inches.
| Inches | Centimetres | |
|---|---|---|
| Underbust | 31 to 32 | 79 to 81 |
| Bust | 38 to 39 | 97 to 99 |
| Difference | 2 to 3 | 5 to 8 |
On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 32E and a US 32DDD; EU charts call it a 70F. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is 36C or 34D bigger?
They hold about the same. These two are sister sizes, and the pairing catches people out because the letters look so different.
Work it through. A 34D is a three to four inch difference on a 34 band, so a bust of 37 to 38 inches. A 36C is a two to three inch difference on a 36 band, so a bust of 38 to 39. The cups land close together. What separates them is the band: the 34 grips more firmly, the 36 sits looser and suits a wider ribcage.
If you own a 34D whose band creeps up your back by lunchtime, that is not the size for you regardless of how the cup feels, and a 36C will not fix it either. The fix in that direction is a tighter band, not a looser one.
Is a 36C big or small?
The band is wide. The letter is average. Together they make a size that is larger than most people assume from the C alone.
Being precise here matters, because "is a C cup big" cannot be answered as asked. A cup letter records the difference between your bust and your band, not a volume. The same letter on a wider band means a bigger cup in absolute terms, every time. A 36C cup holds meaningfully more than a 30C cup, and neither fact says anything about the person wearing it.
Indian charts run A to F with no DD, and Indian shops usually stock A to D. A C sits comfortably inside that.
Is 36C bigger than 34B?
Yes, and by more than one step. The band is two inches wider and the letter is one higher, so it is larger in both directions at once.
A 34B is a one to two inch difference on a 34 band. A 36C is a two to three inch difference on a 36. There is no overlap between them, which makes this one of the few size comparisons with a clean answer.
Sister sizes when 36C is close but wrong
Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:
38B ← 36C → 34D
All three hold a similar volume and differ in how firmly the band sits.
In a fitting room:
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 34D
- Band comfortable, spilling over the top: stay on 36 and go up to 36D
- Band digs in or leaves marks, cup fits: go up to 38B
A different move, dropping to a 34C with the letter unchanged, is not a sister swap at all: same letter on a tighter band is a smaller cup. The 34C guide walks through what moving along one band actually changes.
Take a band that rides up seriously. The band does most of the work of holding a bra in place, and when it loosens, the straps take over and dig into your shoulders. That combination, riding band and sore shoulders, almost always means going down a band and up a letter.
When the outfit removes the band
A 36C is only useful while there is somewhere to put it. The wider the band, the more visible it is under fitted clothing, and the more likely a neckline is to remove it entirely. Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes all do.
What holds without a band:
- A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size, which adheres to skin and keeps its shape with no band and no straps. It is made in 36C.
- Lift tape, placed by hand, for necklines a moulded cup cannot follow.
For a saree blouse or a deep neckline where you need to control exactly where the lift sits, our guide to taping under a backless outfit covers the placements that work.
The short version
A 36C fits an underbust of 31 to 32 inches with a bust two to three inches larger. It holds roughly what a 34D holds, on a looser band, so if you are choosing between them the deciding factor is your ribcage rather than your cup. Go to 34D for a firmer band or 36D for more room.
The measuring method is in our bra size chart for India, and the same letter on a narrower band is covered in 36B bra size. How the four letters on this band compare is the subject of the 36 bra size guide.
