A 34D is a 34 band with a D cup. The letter carries a reputation it has not earned, mostly because D is where the size rail ends in a lot of Indian shops.
Not sure it is your size? The bra size calculator turns two measurements into an answer, sister sizes included.
What a 34D actually measures
On Indian sizing the band is your underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four inches. A 34 band is cut for someone measuring about 29 to 30 inches underneath.
The letter is the gap between bust and band. D is three to four inches.
| Inches | Centimetres | |
|---|---|---|
| Underbust | 29 to 30 | 74 to 76 |
| Bust | 37 to 38 | 94 to 97 |
| Difference | 3 to 4 | 8 to 10 |
On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 30F and a US 30G; EU charts call it a 65G. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is a 34D large?
Not in the way the letter implies. It is the largest cup most Indian brands stock, which is a fact about retail range rather than about bodies.
The system does not stop at D. Indian charts run A, B, C, D, E, F, with no DD anywhere in it. A four inch difference is an E and a five inch difference is an F, and both are ordinary measurements that simply get harder to buy for. So D reads as the ceiling because it is usually the last size on the shelf.
A cup letter is also a difference and not a volume. A D on a 34 band holds less than a D on a 40, because each letter is measured against the band it sits on. Comparing letters between two people tells you nothing unless their bands match.
Is 34D or 34C bigger?
34D, by about an inch of difference between bust and band. Same band, one letter up.
Because the band is identical, the two feel the same around the ribcage. If a 34C digs in, a 34D will dig in exactly as much, which is a useful diagnostic: it means the band is your problem and the cup letter will not fix it.
Is 34D a medium?
Bra sizes do not map onto S, M and L, which is why the question keeps coming up and never gets a straight answer. A bra is fitted on two independent measurements. Clothing sizes compress those into one number, and the compression loses the information that makes a bra fit.
Where you do have to pick a letter size, for a bodysuit or a swim top, go by the underbust and bust measurements on that garment's own chart rather than translating from your bra size.
Sister sizes when 34D is close but wrong
Every size has neighbours holding a similar cup volume on a different band. Move the band one step, move the letter the opposite way:
36C ← 34D → 32E
All three hold roughly the same amount and differ in how tightly the band sits.
In practice:
- Band rides up your back, cup fits: go down to 32E
- Band comfortable, spilling over the top: stay on 34 and go up to 34E
- Band digs in, cup fits: go up to 36C
One caveat specific to this size. Most Indian brands, including ours, stop at D, so the 32E half of that pair is often not buyable even though it is the correct answer. When that happens, 36C is the practical swap, and a band that fits firmly matters more than landing on the exact letter. Our sister sizes guide charts the whole grid, unstocked corners included.
When a 34D bra has nowhere to sit
A size only helps while the outfit leaves somewhere to put the bra. Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes remove the band, the straps, or both, and a D cup is the point at which people start assuming there is no option.
There are two:
- A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size. It sticks to skin and holds its shape with no band and no straps, and it is made in 34D.
- Lift tape, which you position yourself, for necklines a moulded cup cannot follow.
Both work harder at a D than at an A, so clean dry skin and firm pressure along the whole edge matter more. Our guide to breast lift tape covers what taping can and cannot do by cup size, including where it stops being the right tool.
The short version
A 34D fits an underbust of 29 to 30 inches with a bust three to four inches larger. D is the end of most Indian size rails, not the end of the sizing system, and the letter describes a difference rather than a volume. If the band rides up, 32E is the technically correct swap and 36C is the one you can usually buy.
The full method is in our bra size chart for India, and the same letter on a narrower band is covered in 32B bra size. The 34 bra size guide puts the four letters of the band against each other.
