A 34C sits in the middle of the Indian size range in both directions, which is why so many people own one, and why so many of those people are actually a size either side of it.
If you have not measured, our bra size calculator does the arithmetic and gives you the neighbours to try.
What size is a 34C bra?
Indian band sizing takes your underbust, rounds it up to an even number and adds four. A 34 band is built for an underbust of about 29 to 30 inches, not 34.
The letter is the difference between bust and band. C is two to three inches.
| Inches | Centimetres | |
|---|---|---|
| Underbust | 29 to 30 | 74 to 76 |
| Bust | 36 to 37 | 91 to 94 |
| Difference | 2 to 3 | 5 to 8 |
On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 30E and a US 30DDD; EU charts call it a 65F. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is 34C big or small?
Middle of the range on both counts. Indian bands run roughly 30 to 44 and the letters run A to F with no DD, so a 34C sits near the centre of a chart rather than at either end.
The letter is the part that gets misread. A cup letter records how much bigger your bust is than your band, so it scales with the band underneath it. A C on a 34 holds less than a C on a 40 and more than a C on a 30. Comparing your letter to someone else's tells you nothing unless you are both on the same band.
Which is bigger, 34C or 36C?
36C, in both dimensions. The band is two inches wider and the cup is larger with it.
That second half is the counterintuitive bit. Same letter does not mean same cup, because each letter is measured against its own band. Going from a 34 to a 36 while keeping the C makes the cup bigger, not equal. If you want a wider band with the same amount of room, the swap is 36B, not 36C.
Is a 34C bigger than a 32D?
They hold a similar amount. They are sister sizes.
A 34C is a two to three inch difference on a 34 band. A 32D is a three to four inch difference on a 32. The cups land close together, and what actually separates them is the band: 34 for an underbust of 29 to 30 inches, 32 for 27 to 28.
Since Indian shops stock 34C far more readily than 32D, a lot of people who measure 32D are wearing a 34C by default. If that is you and the band creeps up your back through the day, the shop's stock made that decision, not your measurements.
Moving along the 34 band
The useful thing about the 34 band is that everything on it feels identical around your ribcage, so changing letter changes one variable and nothing else:
- 34B if the cup gapes at the top edge when you lean forward
- 34C if it lies flat against you all the way round
- 34D if the cup edge cuts across tissue, or you are spilling at the underarm
Gaping means the cup is too big, which surprises people who expect a poor fit to always mean too small. Test it by leaning forward from the waist and letting everything settle into the cup before you look.
Sister sizes when 34C is close but wrong
Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:
36B ← 34C → 32D
All three hold a similar volume and differ in how firmly the band sits.
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 32D
- Band comfortable, spilling over: stay on 34 and go up to 34D
- Band digs in, cup fits: go up to 36B
A cup that feels too small is often a band that is too loose, because a loose band lets everything sit below where the cup was cut for. Try the sister size before deciding the cup is the problem.
When the outfit removes the band
Your size only helps while the outfit gives the bra somewhere to sit. Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes take away the band, the straps, or both.
What works without them:
- A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size, which sticks to skin and holds its shape with no band and no straps. It is made in 34C.
- Lift tape, which you place yourself, for necklines a moulded cup cannot follow.
If you only need coverage rather than shape, nipple covers are the simpler answer, and our guide to using them covers wear time and cleaning.
The short version
A 34C fits an underbust of 29 to 30 inches with a bust two to three inches larger. It is a middle-of-the-chart size, which is exactly why you should check it rather than assume it: 32D holds the same cup on a firmer band, and 36B holds it on a looser one. The band tells you which.
The full method is in our bra size chart for India, and the same letter on a wider band is covered in 36C bra size. The 34 bra size guide walks the band from A to D.
