36B bra size: what it measures, and what it actually looks like

A 36B fits an underbust of about 31 to 32 inches with a bust roughly two inches larger. The letter makes it sound small and the number makes it sound large, which is why the size confuses people. Here is what it means.

36B bra size: what it measures, and what it actually looks like

A 36B is a wide band with a modest cup letter, and that combination is exactly why the size gets misread. The number sounds large, the letter sounds small, and neither impression is doing what people think.

Skip the arithmetic with our bra size calculator, which returns sister sizes too.

What a 36B measures

Indian band sizing is your underbust rounded up to an even number plus four inches. A 36 band is therefore cut for an underbust of about 31 to 32 inches.

The cup letter is the difference between bust and band, and B is two inches.

Inches Centimetres
Underbust 31 to 32 79 to 81
Bust about 38 about 97
Difference 2 5

How does a 36B look?

A bra size describes two measurements and the gap between them. It does not describe shape, and shape is what "looks like" is really asking about. Two people who both measure 36B can look entirely different, because breast tissue is distributed differently, sits differently, and is carried on differently shaped ribcages.

What the size does tell you: the bust is about two inches larger than the band, on a frame measuring 31 to 32 inches underneath. Anything past that varies from person to person, & no chart resolves it.

Is 36B a small size?

The letter is on the smaller end. The band is not: a 36 is wider than most of the range Indian brands stock, which runs roughly 30 to 44.

Those two facts point in opposite directions, and that is the source of the confusion. A cup letter is a difference, not a volume, so it scales with the band it sits on. The B cup on a 36 band holds noticeably more than the B cup on a 30 band, even though both are labelled B.

Read the letter as "how much bigger than the band", not "how big".

Is 34B or 36B bigger?

36B. The band is wider, cut for an underbust two inches larger.

The cup is bigger too, which surprises people. Because each letter is measured against its own band, the B on a 36 holds more than the B on a 34. A larger band with the same letter is always the larger cup in absolute terms.

Sister sizes when 36B is close

Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:

38A ← 36B → 34C

All three hold a similar volume, differing in how firmly the band sits.

The rules that matter in a fitting room:

  • Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 34C
  • Band comfortable, overflowing the cup: stay on 36 and go up to 36C
  • Band feels tight but the cup is right: go up to 38A

A band that rides up at the back is worth taking seriously, because the band is doing most of the work of holding the bra in place. Going down a band and up a letter usually settles it without losing room in the cup.

When there is nowhere to put a band

The wider the band, the more obvious it is under clothing, and the more likely an outfit is to remove it entirely. Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes all take away the places a 36B bra needs.

The alternatives that do not need a band:

  • A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size, which sticks to skin and keeps its shape without band or straps. It is made in 36B.
  • Lift tape, positioned by hand, for necklines a moulded cup cannot follow.

Where you only want coverage, nipple covers do that job on their own.

The short version

A 36B fits an underbust of 31 to 32 inches with a bust about two inches larger. The letter reads small and the band reads wide, but the letter is a difference rather than a volume, so the cup is larger than the same letter on a narrower band. If the band rides up, try 34C.

The measuring method is in our bra size chart for India, and the neighbouring size is covered in 34B bra size.
