32A bra size: what it measures, and what the letter does not tell you

A 32A fits an underbust of about 27 to 28 inches with a bust up to an inch larger. It is the smallest cup on a narrow band, and the size people most often ask whether they ought to mind.

A 32A is a narrow band with the smallest cup letter on the chart. The measurements are straightforward. The reason people search for it usually is not, so this covers both.

Our bra size calculator uses the Indian convention and returns the sizes either side of yours.

What a 32A measures

Indian band sizing is your underbust rounded up to an even number plus four inches. A 32 band suits an underbust of about 27 to 28 inches.

The letter is the difference between bust and band, and on Indian charts A starts at no difference at all.

Inches Centimetres
Underbust 27 to 28 69 to 71
Bust 32 to 33 81 to 84
Difference 0 to 1 0 to 3

Is 32A a small size?

It is the smallest cup letter on a narrow band, so yes, at the small end of what Indian brands stock. That is a description of a chart, and it is about as much as the number can honestly tell you.

Separate the two halves of the label. The band is a measurement of your ribcage, and it varies between people of every build. The letter is a difference between two measurements, so it is not a volume and cannot be compared to anyone else's letter unless your bands match. A 32A and a 38A share a letter and nothing else.

There is no standard or average that a size is supposed to hit. What a bra can be judged on is whether the band sits level all the way round and whether the cup lies flat against you without gaping. Those are answerable questions, and they are the only ones a fitting can settle.

Which is bigger, 32A or 32B?

32B, by about an inch of difference between bust and band. Same band, one letter up.

Both sit identically around your ribcage, so if a 32B digs in exactly as much as a 32A, that is the band talking and the letter will not change it.

Which is bigger, 32A or 32C?

32C, by two letters, which is roughly two inches of difference between bust and band on the same band width.

The gap between A and C is smaller than it sounds. On a 32 band, A is a bust of 32 to 33 inches and C is 34 to 35. The letters are a scale of inches, not a scale of adjectives.

Why an A cup differs by country

On an Indian chart, A means a difference of zero to one inch. On UK and US charts, the band is your underbust with nothing added, and A begins at one inch of difference instead of zero.

The letters are offset by a step and the band numbers by four inches, so the same body is labelled differently on an Indian site and a British one. If a size that fits you here looks wrong on an international size chart, that is the reason. Use the convention of whoever you are buying from and ignore the comparison.

Run the conversion and the labels land further apart than one letter: the 32A body is a 28D on a UK chart and a 60D on an EU one. The bra size converter lines the systems up size by size.

Sister sizes when 32A is close but wrong

Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:

32A → 30B

Like every A cup, this size has one neighbour rather than two. Going down a band gives you 30B, which holds a similar cup more firmly. Going up a band would mean dropping below A, and there is nothing below A on the chart.

  • Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 30B
  • Band comfortable, cup gaping at the top: you are already at the smallest letter, so change cup shape rather than size, and check the band before you conclude the cup is wrong
  • Band digs in, cup fits: try 34A, but it is not a sister size. With no letter to drop, the cup grows along with the band

Look harder at that middle case before acting on it. A gap at the top of the cup is often caused by a band that is too loose, because a loose band rides up and tips the cups away from your chest. Pull the band away from your back on the loosest hook: more than about an inch of give and the band is the problem.

When the outfit leaves nowhere for a band

Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes remove the band, the straps, or both. There is an advantage at this size: less weight for an adhesive to hold means strapless options stay put longer and feel lighter.

  • A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size, which sticks to skin and shapes with no band and no straps. It is made in 32A.
  • Nipple covers for coverage under a thin fabric with nothing else needed.
  • Lift tape where a neckline needs the shaping placed by hand.

The short version

A 32A fits an underbust of 27 to 28 inches with a bust up to an inch larger. On an Indian chart, A starts at no difference at all, a step below what A means in the UK. It has one sister size, 30B, and if the cup gapes, check the band before you change anything else.

The full method is in our bra size chart for India, and the next letter up is covered in 32B bra size. The band as a whole, A to D in one table, is in the 32 bra size guide.
