32B bra size: what it means, and how to tell if it is yours

A 32B is a 32 band with a B cup. The two halves of that answer different questions, and most fit problems come from reading only one of them.

What a 32B actually measures

On Indian sizing, the band number is your underbust measurement rounded up to an even number, plus four inches. So a 32 band is cut for someone measuring roughly 27 to 28 inches under the bust, not 32.

The letter is the gap between your bust and your band. B is a two inch difference. Put those together:

If your underbust is 27 or 28 inches and your bust measures about two inches more than your band number, 32B is your size on paper. Whether it is your size in practice depends on the band, which is the part almost nobody checks.

Is 32B small?

It is on the smaller side of the sizes Indian brands stock, which typically run from 30 to 44 in the band and A to D in the cup.

The letter on its own says nothing about volume. A cup letter is a difference, not a fixed amount, so a B on a 32 band and a B on a 40 band are not the same size at all. This is why comparing cup letters between people tells you nothing, and why a size that sounds small can fit someone whose bust measures 34 inches.

Is 32A or 32B bigger?

32B. Same band, one cup letter up, so roughly one inch more difference between bust and band.

Because the band is identical, these two feel the same around your ribcage. If a 32A digs in exactly as much as a 32B, that is expected, and it means the band is not your problem.

Which is bigger, 32B or 34B?

34B, though the difference is in the band before it is anywhere else. The 34 is cut for an underbust of 29 to 30 inches rather than 27 to 28.

The cup grows too. A cup letter is measured against its own band, so the B cup on a 34 holds more than the B cup on a 32. Two sizes with the same letter are not the same cup.

Is 32B small for a 17 year old?

There is no standard size for any age. Bodies vary enormously and keep changing through the teens and well past them, so a size tells you about measurements and nothing else.

If a bra is uncomfortable, the useful question is whether the band sits level and the cup holds everything without gaping or spilling. Those are answerable. Whether a number is normal is not, because there is no normal to compare against.

Sister sizes when 32B is close but wrong

Every size has neighbours holding a similar cup volume on a different band. Move the band one step and move the letter the opposite way:

34A ← 32B → 30C

All three hold roughly the same amount. They differ in how tightly the band sits.

In practice: if the cup is right but the band rides up your back, go down to a 30C. If the band is comfortable but you are spilling over the top, stay on the 32 and go up to a 32C. When a band rides up, a tighter band usually fixes it, and reaching for a bigger cup instead tends to make it worse.

When a 32B bra has nowhere to sit

Your size only helps while the outfit leaves somewhere to put the bra. A backless blouse, a halter neck, a deep V, or a saree draped low all take away the band, the straps, or both.

Two things work without a band:

• A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size, which sticks to skin and holds shape with no band and no straps. It comes in 32B, so you can order the size you just calculated.
• Lift tape, which you position yourself, for necklines a moulded cup cannot follow.

The short version

A 32B fits an underbust of 27 to 28 inches and a bust about two inches larger. It is a smaller size in the Indian range, though the letter alone tells you very little, because a cup is a difference and not a volume. If it is nearly right, try 30C for a firmer band or 32C for more room in the cup.
