A 38A is a 38 band with an A cup: an underbust of about 33 to 34 inches, and a bust at most an inch larger. It is one of the least stocked sizes in India, which makes the fit rules matter more here than anywhere else on the chart.

What a 38A measures
The band number is your underbust rounded up to an even figure, plus four inches. A 38 band is cut for an underbust of about 33 to 34 inches.
The letter is the difference between bust and band. On Indian charts A begins at no difference at all.

On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 34D; EU charts call it a 75D. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Why shops forget this size
Rails are built around sizes where band and cup climb together. A 38 band mostly gets cut with C and D cups, because that is where a wide band usually sells, and the A version is dropped first whenever a range is trimmed. The size is real. The stock is not.
The result is predictable: people who measure 38A end up in whatever hangs nearby, usually without knowing which compromise they have made. There are two reasonable substitutes, and they fail in different ways, so it is worth knowing both before the shop chooses for you.
Is 38A bigger than 36A?
Yes, in both band and cup. The band is cut for an underbust two inches larger. The cup grows with it, because a letter is measured against its own band: the A on a 38 holds more than the A on a 36, despite the identical letter.
This is why you cannot fix a missing 38A by simply buying the same letter on another band. Everything shifts at once.
The two substitutes, and which one to take
When there is no 38A to buy, two sizes stand in for it.
38B keeps your band and adds a letter. The band fits exactly as a 38A would, and the cup has slightly more room than you need. A soft or unlined cup absorbs that quietly; a rigid moulded cup may crease or stand away at the top edge.
36B is the true sister: a similar cup volume on a band cut two inches smaller. If your 38 bands always ride up, it is the better bra. If your 38 bands sit level and firm, a 36 band will squeeze.
The rule that decides between them: compromise on the letter, never on the band. A slightly roomy cup wastes a little space. A wrong band moves the whole bra while you wear it, because the band is the part doing the holding. A 38B that sits level beats a 36B that digs in, and a 36B that stays put beats a 38B that creeps up your back.
Sister sizes when 38A is close but wrong
An A cup has one sister, because there is no letter below A to trade down to:
38A → 36B
In a fitting room:
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 36B
- Band comfortable, cup gaping at the top: check the band tension before you blame the cup, since you are already at the smallest letter. A band with too much give tips the cups off your chest and fakes a too-big cup
- Band digs in, cup fits: try 40A, knowing it is not a sister. With nothing below A, the cup grows a little along with the band

When the outfit takes the band away
Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes remove the band entirely, and for once this size has the advantage. With under an inch of difference to support, an adhesive has an easy job.
A strapless adhesive bra holds a moulded shape on skin with no band and no straps, and it is made in 38A. Clean dry skin and full contact along the edge are still the rules, but at this cup depth the margin for error is wide.
