What does a D cup actually mean?
The band is your underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four inches, and the letter is your bust minus that band number. D covers a difference of three to four inches (8 to 10 cm). The scale runs A to F with no DD between the steps, so D sits two letters from the top of the chart, not at it.

Is a 30D bigger than a 38B?
No. A 30D is a bust of 33 to 34 inches; a 38B is a bust of 39 to 40. The 38B is the larger body by any tape you run around it; the 30D is the larger difference between bust and band. Cup letters compare you with your own ribcage and with nobody else, so they cannot rank two people. Whenever D sounds big and B sounds modest, this pair is the correction.
Why does D read as the top of the scale?
For most Indian shops it is the last letter on the rail, and the eye reads the end of the rail as the end of the scale. The chart itself runs two letters further: E is a four to five inch difference and F is five to six. Stopping at D is a stocking decision, and it feeds the myth from both directions. Nothing bigger is visible, so D sounds enormous, and wearers whose difference is larger get folded into Ds that do not fit, so D appears to cover everything above it. One inch separates a D from a C.
What are the sister sizes for a D cup?
At D the pair is lopsided. The band-up sister is a C and usually buyable; the band-down sister is an E and usually not. The standard example: 36C ← 34D → 32E, where 36C is stocked and 32E is real arithmetic that rarely reaches a shelf.
- Band digs in, cup fits: band up and letter down lands on a stocked C (34D to 36C)

What changes for adhesive wear at a D?
Everything that sticks works harder at a D than at an A, because there is more weight per square centimetre of grip. That is a reason to be exact rather than a reason to avoid the category: clean, dry skin with nothing on it, and firm pressure along the whole edge of whatever you apply.
