A 38D is a 38 band with a D cup: an underbust of about 33 to 34 inches, and a bust three to four inches larger. This close to the top of the stocked range, the band carries nearly the whole job, and band fit decides whether the bra works before the letter gets a say.

What a 38D measures
The band is your underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four inches, so a 38 is cut for an underbust of about 33 to 34 inches.
The letter is the difference between bust and band. D is three to four inches.

On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 34F and a US 34G; EU charts call it a 75G. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
The band does the carrying
The band, not the straps, is the load-bearing part of a bra. Weight travels through the cups into the band and around the ribcage; the straps steady the cups and stop them tipping, and that is all they are for.
At a 38D there is more weight making that journey than at almost any other stocked size, so a band failure is expensive. A loose band hands the load to the straps, the straps hand it to your shoulders, and by evening you have grooves, a stiff neck and a band sitting somewhere between your shoulder blades. None of that is a cup problem, and no cup letter will fix it.
So fit the band first, and fit it firm. On the loosest hook it should sit level all the way around, parallel to the floor, with only a little give when you pull it away from your back. Buy on the loosest hook so the tighter ones are in reserve for when the band relaxes with wear.
Is 38D bigger than 34D?
Yes, in both halves. The bands are four inches apart, and the cups scale with them: a D is a three to four inch difference wherever it sits, so the D on a 38 wraps a bust of 41 to 42 inches while the D on a 34 wraps 37 to 38.
The letter only records the gap between two measurements, so on its own it says nothing about actual size.
Sister sizes: one real, one theoretical
Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:
40C ← 38D → 36E
Both hold roughly the same cup volume. Only one of them is on Indian shelves. A 36E is correct arithmetic, but most brands here stop the rail at D, so the band-down sister is a size you will rarely find. That leaves 40C as the sister you can actually order.
Which direction you need still depends on the band:
- Band digs in or leaves deep marks, cup fits: go up to 40C, the buyable sister
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: the correct answer is 36E, and since you will rarely find one, the practical fix is a firmer 38: a newer bra or a tighter hook
- Band right, spilling over the top: a 38E has the same availability problem, so keep the band and look at cup shape, since fuller-coverage cuts hold more without a letter change

Adhesive wear at a 38D, honestly
An adhesive holds by surface contact, and a D cup on a wide band asks more of that contact than any smaller size does. It still works. It just stops forgiving shortcuts.
Skin must be clean and completely dry: no moisturiser, no oil, no talc, and not straight out of a hot shower. Press the full edge of whatever you apply, rather than just the centre, and give the adhesive a few seconds of palm warmth to settle. Sweat works against you, so on a long humid day expect less hold than on a dry one.
For lift specifically, wide tape carries more than any cover can. Put nipple covers on first and run the tape over them, so the pull lands on the cover instead of the most sensitive skin. When the outfit takes the band away
Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes remove the band that this size depends on, and a D cup is where people usually assume the options end.
They do not. A strapless adhesive bra holds a pre-moulded shape on skin with no band and no straps, and it is made in 38D. The cup spreads its grip over a large surface, which is exactly what a deeper cup needs from an adhesive. Treat the application steps above as non-optional and it will hold an evening.
The short version
A 38D fits an underbust of 33 to 34 inches with a bust three to four inches larger. The band does the carrying at this size, so fit it first, firm and level, before judging any cup. Of the two sisters, 40C is the one you can buy; 36E mostly exists on paper. Adhesives work here with discipline: clean dry skin, full contact, and wide tape over covers when you need lift.
