A 40D is a 40 band with a D cup: an underbust of about 35 to 36 inches, and a bust three to four inches bigger. It sits in the top corner of most stocked size grids, which makes it the size where standard fit advice needs an honesty note attached, because the usual escape routes mostly do not exist here.

What a 40D actually measures
Band: underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four inches. Letter: the difference between bust and band, A at zero, one letter per inch, D at three to four.

On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 36F and a US 36G; EU charts call it a 80G. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is 40D big?
The band is wide and the difference is three to four inches, and it is worth keeping those two facts separate, because the letter alone does not say what people assume it says.
A cup letter measures a difference against its own band, so the same letter holds more actual volume as the band widens: a D cup on a 40 band contains more than a D on a 34, though each is "a D". Comparing letters between two people tells you nothing without the bands attached. What 40D does tell you is where retail gives up: D is the last letter on most Indian rails and 40 is close to the last band, so this size lives at the corner where the grid ends. That is a fact about stocking. The sizing system itself continues past it in both directions.
The corner problem: both sisters are unstocked
Sister sizes trade band for letter while holding similar volume:

At most sizes one of those directions rescues a near-miss fit. At 40D, neither reliably does. A 42 band is rare in Indian shops, and an E cup is rarer; both sisters are honest arithmetic pointing at rails that mostly do not exist. So fit work at 40D happens on the 40 band itself:
- Band rides up: it is stretched or was always big. A firmer band in the same size beats a size change that cannot be bought.
- Band digs: check the cup first. A too-small cup displaces tissue onto the band and reads as a band problem; going up to 40E, where findable, fixes what a wider band would not.
- Cup spills with a comfortable band: the same 40E answer, with the same finding difficulty. 38D is nearby in volume terms but its tighter band is a real change, not a formality.
Adhesive wear at the top of the grid
Our strapless adhesive bra runs 30A to 40D, so this size is the last entry in the grid and every bit of it is load-bearing: an adhesive cup at 40D is holding more than the same product ever holds at 32B. It works, with the preparation done properly, and preparation is most of the outcome at this size: clean and completely dry skin, no moisturiser or talc that day, every edge pressed down firmly, and a fresh wash between wears so the surface keeps its tack. For necklines even that cannot follow, wide lift tape carries weight better than any cup, cover or clasp.
