A 36A is a 36 band with an A cup: an underbust of about 31 to 32 inches, and a bust at most an inch larger. Retail treats that pairing as an oddity. The arithmetic treats it as a size like any other, and the arithmetic is right.
Not sure it is your size? The bra size calculator turns two measurements into an answer, sister sizes included.
What a 36A measures
Indian sizing takes your underbust, rounds it up to an even number and adds four inches, so a 36 band is cut for an underbust of about 31 to 32 inches.
The letter is the difference between bust and band, and on an Indian chart A starts at no difference at all.
| Inches | Centimetres | |
|---|---|---|
| Underbust | 31 to 32 | 79 to 81 |
| Bust | 36 to 37 | 91 to 94 |
| Difference | 0 to 1 | 0 to 3 |
On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 32D; EU charts call it a 70D. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Why a wide band with a small cup is not a contradiction
The two halves of a bra size measure different things. The band number describes your ribcage. The letter describes how far your bust stands out from that ribcage. Nothing connects them: a broad frame does not order a deep cup along with it, and a narrow frame does not rule one out.
The reason a 36A reads as unusual is the rail rather than the chart. Shops stock heaviest where band and letter climb together, so a size that pairs a wider band with the smallest letter sits outside the cluster and gets cut first when a range is trimmed. That is a stocking decision. It says nothing about the body wearing the size.
Is 36A bigger than 34A?
Yes, in both halves of the label. The band is two inches wider, cut for an underbust of 31 to 32 inches rather than 29 to 30.
The cup is larger too, which is the counterintuitive part. A letter is measured against its own band, so the A on a 36 holds more than the A on a 34. If you moved up from a 34A expecting the same cup on a looser band, that is why it feels roomier than you expected.
An A cup here is not an A cup everywhere
On Indian sizing, A covers a difference of zero to one inch between bust and band. Other conventions draw the bands and the letters differently, so the same two measurements can come back with a different label on a foreign site.
Neither label is wrong, and neither changes anything about you. Check which convention a chart uses before you order, and skip the comparison between systems entirely: the only chart that matters is the one used by whoever you are buying from.
Sister sizes when 36A is close but wrong
Sister sizes trade band for letter while keeping the cup roughly level. An A cup has only one, because there is no letter below A to trade down to:
36A → 34B
Going down a band gives you 34B, a similar cup held on a firmer band. There is no size in the other direction.
In a fitting room:
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 34B
- Band comfortable, cup gaping at the top: you are already at the smallest letter, so check the band before you blame the cup. A loose band tips the cups away from your chest and opens a gap that no change of letter will close
- Band digs in, cup fits: try 38A, knowing it is not a sister. With no letter below A to drop to, the cup grows slightly along with the band
For the deeper letters this band carries and where the boundaries between them sit, there is the 36 bra size guide.
When the outfit takes the band away
Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes leave a banded bra nowhere to sit, whatever the size. A shallow cup is the easiest case to solve without one: there is very little weight for an adhesive to carry, so it holds longer and feels lighter than it does at deeper cups.
A strapless adhesive bra does the shaping with no band and no straps, and it is made in 36A. At this cup depth the adhesive is doing the least work it ever does, which makes this one of the sizes it suits best.
The short version
A 36A fits an underbust of 31 to 32 inches with a bust at most an inch larger. A wide band with a shallow cup is ordinary in the arithmetic and rare on the rail, and the rail is the one that is wrong. Its single sister size is 34B, for when the band rides up. If the cup gapes, check the band before changing anything else.
The full measuring method is in our bra size chart for India, and the same letter on a narrower band is covered in 34A bra size.
