A 30 bra size is a band measurement: it means your underbust is about 25 to 26 inches, and it means nothing else. The number describes your frame under the bust, not your bust, which is why "what does 30 mean" has no answer until a letter joins it. This guide covers the band and all four letters stocked on it.
Not sure which letter is yours? The bra size calculator turns two measurements into an answer, sister sizes included.
What the 30 band measures
On Indian sizing the band is your underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four inches. So a 30 band fits an underbust of about 25 to 26 inches (64 to 66 cm). That is the whole claim the number makes.
The letter carries the rest: the difference between your bust and the band number, starting at A for a zero-inch difference and climbing one letter per inch.
UK and US charts build the band without the plus-four, so a 30 band here is a 26 there, and about a 55 in EU sizing. Cup-by-cup equivalents are in the bra size converter.
The four cups on a 30 band
| Size | Bust (inches) | Bust (cm) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30A | 30 to 31 | 76 to 79 | 0 to 1 |
| 30B | 31 to 32 | 79 to 81 | 1 to 2 |
| 30C | 32 to 33 | 81 to 84 | 2 to 3 |
| 30D | 33 to 34 | 84 to 86 | 3 to 4 |
Underbust is identical in every row. The letters climb one inch at a time, and boundaries resolve upward, so a measured difference of exactly two inches is a C, not a B.
Same band, same feel
All four sizes wrap the same ribcage with the same tension, so the band feels identical whichever letter you wear. That gives you a clean diagnostic. If a 30-band bra digs in, rides up or leaves deep marks, changing the letter will change nothing, because the letter never touches the band. Fix the band by measuring; fix the cup by watching where it gapes or spills.
The two-finger test settles most of it: a band that fits sits level all the way round and admits two flat fingers underneath, no more, no fewer with effort.
30A vs 30B vs 30C vs 30D in practice
30A is the close-set end: a bust within an inch of the frame. Its fit problems are usually gaping cups, solved by shallower shapes rather than smaller numbers, and its one sister size is mostly theoretical. The 30A post covers it.
30B is one inch along, and the most commonly stocked of the four. Details in the 30B post.
30C sits on the boundary people most often misjudge, one rounding error from 30B. If your tape hovers near two inches of difference, the 30C post explains which way the call goes.
30D is the size shops forget to make: an ordinary body, an empty rail. The 30D post covers the buyable sister and when to insist on the true size.
Sister bands: 28 and 32
Each 30 size has neighbours one band away with the letter moved the opposite way, holding similar volume. Band up lands on 32, which is stocked everywhere and where most swaps should go: 30C to 32B, 30D to 32C. Band down lands on 28, which Indian retail barely makes, so those swaps exist mostly on paper. In other words, from a 30 band you can trade outward but rarely inward, and it is worth knowing that before a fitting-room experiment.
Is 30 a small size?
It is a narrow band. Whether the bust is small is a different axis entirely, which is the whole point of the two-part size: a 30D carries a fuller bust than a 34A despite the smaller number in front. Frame and fullness vary independently, and the size system exists to record both without collapsing them into one word.
For outfits that remove the band altogether, our strapless adhesive bra is stocked in every size on this page, 30A through 30D included.
The short version
A 30 bra size means a 25-to-26 inch underbust, and the letter after it means the bust sits zero to four inches beyond that, one letter per inch, boundaries resolving upward. The band feels the same in all four letters, so band complaints need a band fix and cup complaints need a letter fix. Swaps upward to 32 are easy, swaps downward to 28 mostly are not. The full method is in the bra size chart for India.
