A bra size is built from two measurements taken a few inches apart, and the words for them are the ones that confuse people. Underbust is the measurement around your ribcage directly below the breast, where a band sits. Overbust is the measurement around the fullest part of the breast, and it is the same thing as bust size. Every bra calculator on the internet is asking for these two numbers, whatever it calls them.
What is the underbust measurement?
The circumference of the torso immediately under the breast, on the ribcage. Hold the tape where the underwire or the bottom edge of a band would sit. Pull it snug: firm enough that it would not slide down if you let go, not so tight that it digs in. Breathe out and take the reading, because the band has to fit when your lungs are empty, not only when they are full.
This is the measurement that becomes the band, and it is the one people most often skip.
What is the overbust measurement?
The circumference around the fullest part of the breast, usually across the nipple line, with the tape level front and back. Here the tape is held flat against the body without any tension at all. Stand upright, no leaning forward, and wear nothing on top or a thin unpadded bra. A padded bra adds its own inches and a tight tape takes some away, and both errors shift the cup letter.
If you already know your bust size from a clothing chart, that is your overbust. What bust size means covers why that one number is a blouse size but not a bra size.
How do the two become a bra size?
On Indian sizing, the band is the underbust rounded up to an even number, plus four. The cup is the overbust minus that band, one letter for each inch of difference, starting at A when there is no difference at all. Landing exactly on a boundary rounds up to the larger cup.

Notice what the table shows. The overbust never appears in the size directly; only the gap does. Two women with the same overbust of 36 inches get different sizes if their underbusts differ, and two women with different overbusts can share a cup letter. A cup is a difference, not a volume, which is why a C on one band is not the same amount of breast as a C on another.

What if you only have one of the two?
You have half a size. An underbust alone gives a band with no cup, which is useless because every band comes in every letter. An overbust alone gives a bust size that could belong to several bra sizes at once. There is no shortcut through this: five seconds with the tape a few inches lower is the only fix.
Where people get one measurement from memory and the other from a fresh reading, the fresh one is usually right and the remembered one is usually years old. Take both on the same day.
Why do the UK and US numbers look different?
Because they use the same two measurements and a different formula. In the UK and US, the band is the underbust as measured, with nothing added, and the cup letters start at one inch of difference rather than zero. The same body gets a smaller band number and a larger letter than it does on an Indian chart. Nothing about the body has changed; the label has. The bra size chart shows both systems side by side, and the bra size converter does the translation for a size you already have.
Do corsets use the words the same way?
The same words, a different meaning, which is a fair share of why people search for them. An underbust corset is a style that stops below the breast and is worn with a bra; an overbust corset covers the bust and replaces one. So on a corset listing, "underbust" and "overbust" name the garment's cut, not your measurements. On a bra chart they always mean the two circumferences above. If you are sizing a corset, its chart will ask for a waist measurement, and the bust numbers matter only for the overbust style.
Why this matters for a stick-on bra
Adhesive products are sized in three different ways, and the two measurements sort out which one applies. The strapless adhesive bra, moulded cups with a clasp between them, is sized like a bra from 30A to 40D, so it needs both numbers. The butterfly stick-on bra is sized by cup letter only, so it needs the difference. The fabric uplift cups are Small, Medium or Large by cup as well.
