An hourglass figure is three measurements in a particular relationship: the bust and the hips come out about the same, and the waist is clearly smaller than both. On the rule our body shape calculator uses, that means bust and hips within two inches of each other, and a waist at least nine inches under the bust or ten under the hips. Height, weight and dress size play no part in it.
What measurements make an hourglass body shape?
Two tests, and both have to pass.
The first is balance. Subtract your bust from your hips. If the answer is two inches or less in either direction, they count as level.
The second is the waist. It has to sit at least nine inches below the bust measurement, or at least ten below the hips. One of the two is enough.
In centimetres that is bust and hips within about 5 cm, and a waist about 23 cm under the bust or 25 cm under the hips.
| Bust | Waist | Hips | Reads as | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 26 | 36 | Hourglass | Bust and hips level, waist 10 inches under both |
| 34 | 25 | 36 | Hourglass | Hips 2 inches wider, which still counts as level; waist 9 under the bust |
| 38 | 29 | 39 | Hourglass | 1 inch apart; waist 9 under the bust |
| 36 | 28 | 37 | Rectangle | Level, but the waist is 8 under the bust and 9 under the hips: an inch short both ways |
| 34 | 26 | 38 | Pear | Hips 4 inches wider than the bust, so the balance test fails |
The fourth row is the one to look at. A single inch at the waist moves a body from one word to another, and nothing about how that body looks or dresses changes at the line. Other calculators put the lines in slightly different places, so numbers close to a boundary can come back with a different name elsewhere.
If you have not measured yet, how to measure your waist and where the hip measurement goes cover the two that go wrong most often. The bust is taken around the fullest part with the tape level.
Is 36-24-36 an hourglass figure?
As a set of measurements, yes. Bust and hips are level and the waist is twelve inches smaller, which clears the rule easily, and every calculator reads it the same way.
It is also uncommon, and it has been repeated as an ideal for so long that it stopped describing anybody in particular. Three numbers say nothing about height, health or how clothes will hang. A 40-30-41 is an hourglass by exactly the same rule.
Why do clothes gape at the waist?
Because ready-made clothing is cut for a smaller difference between waist and hip than an hourglass has. Trousers that go over the hip stand away from the body at the waistband. A dress that fits the bust hangs loose through the middle. A kurta sized for the bust becomes a tent.
The fix is nearly always the same: buy for the larger measurement and take the waist in. Taking in a waist is a routine alteration on a kurta or a pair of trousers, and it beats buying the wrong size twice.
What should you wear on an hourglass figure?
Anything that follows the waist will show the shape, and anything cut straight will hide it. Both are fine, and which you want is your decision.
Clothes that follow the waist include wrap dresses, belted kurtas, anarkalis with a fitted bodice, high-waisted trousers, and a saree with a blouse that ends at the natural waist. Fabric with some stretch helps, since it can fit two measurements at once.
Boxy shirts, straight shift dresses and oversized kurtas hang from the bust and skip the waist. On an hourglass they read wider than the body under them. If you like them anyway, a half tuck or a belt brings the waist back.
What should you wear underneath?
Less than you might expect. Your proportions already do what shapewear is usually bought to do, so the job underneath is the surface: a smooth line under a fitted dress, with nothing redrawing a waist that needs no help. A bodysuit at medium compression does that. The all-in-one sculpt bodysuit has detachable straps, so it works under a strapless or one-shoulder neckline too.
Sizing it takes a moment of care. With a small waist and a fuller hip, your two measurements will often land in different rows of a chart, and the hip is the one that decides. The shapewear size finder reads both for you.
Fit tends to go wrong at the bust more than at the waist. A cup that runs out of room shows through a close-cut dress more clearly than anything else, so it is worth checking your size with the bra size calculator before blaming the dress. Under a strapless or backless cut, the butterfly stick-on bra is sized by cup letter and leaves nothing at the back to show.
Can you become an hourglass?
Your measurements can move, and the shape moves with them. Weight, pregnancy, muscle and age all change the three numbers. What does not change is the frame under them: the width of the ribcage and the pelvis is bone. So a rectangle who gains or loses weight often stays a rectangle at a different size.
Shapewear changes the line under one outfit for one evening. It does not change the measurements, and a garment tight enough to try will hurt by the third hour.
The short version
An hourglass is bust and hips within two inches of each other, with a waist at least nine inches under the bust or ten under the hips. It is a description of measurements and carries no verdict on the body. Clothes usually need taking in at the waist, shapewear only has to smooth, and the bust is where fit most often slips. Put your own three numbers into the body shape calculator to see which side of the line they fall.
