Waist size is the distance around your middle at its narrowest point, measured with a tape held level. On most people that point is an inch or so above the navel and well above where a pair of jeans sits, which is why the number on your trousers and the number on the tape rarely agree.
What does waist size mean?
It means the natural waist: the narrowest part of the torso between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the hip bones. If you cannot see where that is, bend to one side. The crease that forms is your waist.
Size charts for dresses, skirts, kurta sets and shapewear all mean this measurement when they say "waist". Trousers are the exception, because most of them do not sit there. A mid-rise or low-rise waistband circles the body lower down, where it is wider, so the number on the label is often bigger than the natural waist of the person wearing it. Neither number is wrong. They are measurements of two different places.
How do you measure waist size?
- Stand straight with your feet together, in underwear or a thin layer. Measuring over jeans adds to the number.
- Find the narrowest part of your middle. Bend sideways if you need to and mark the crease with a finger.
- Wrap a soft tape around that point and check in a mirror that it is level front to back.
- Keep the tape snug against the skin without pressing in. You should be able to slide one finger under it.
- Breathe out normally and read the number. Do not hold your stomach in. That changes the answer and nothing else, and the garment has to fit the waist you have all day.
No soft tape in the house? Use a piece of string, mark where it meets, and lay it against a ruler or a steel tape.
Waist size in inches and cm
Indian tapes usually carry both units. To convert, multiply inches by 2.54.
| Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|
| 24 | 61 |
| 26 | 66 |
| 28 | 71 |
| 30 | 76 |
| 32 | 81 |
| 34 | 86 |
| 36 | 91 |
| 38 | 97 |
| 40 | 102 |
| 42 | 107 |
| 44 | 112 |
Which size is my waist?
This is the general chart most Indian underwear and shapewear follows. Brands cut differently, so where this table and a product page disagree, the product page is right.
| Size | Waist (inches) | Waist (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| S | 28 to 30 | 71 to 76 |
| M | 30 to 32 | 76 to 81 |
| L | 32 to 34 | 81 to 86 |
| XL | 34 to 36 | 86 to 91 |
| XXL | 36 to 38 | 91 to 97 |
A 26 waist sits below the S row and is an XS on most charts. A 28 waist is an S. A 32 waist is the top of M or the bottom of L, and a 34 is the top of L or the bottom of XL. When a number lands on the line between two letters, the waist cannot settle it by itself. The hip measurement does, and the larger of the two letters is the one to buy. The underwear size chart explains why the larger measurement wins.
Why is my jeans size different from my waist?
Because jeans are sized at the waistband, and the waistband sits wherever the rise puts it. A high-rise pair comes close to your natural waist. A low-rise pair sits two or three inches lower, around the top of the hip bones, where you are wider. Add the stretch in most denim and the way each brand grades its sizes, and the number on the label turns into a name for a size, not a measurement of you.
When you buy anything fitted from a chart, use the tape number.
Does waist size decide my shapewear size?
Partly. Shapewear is sized on waist and hip together, and when the two disagree, the hip decides, since the garment has to travel over your widest point before it can sit anywhere. The shapewear size guide has a worked example.
Some pieces print the waist straight onto the size. Our all-in-one sculpt bodysuit is labelled S-M for a 26 to 32 inch waist, L for 33 to 38 and XL for 39 to 44, so there the tape number is the size. If you would rather not read rows at all, the shapewear size finder takes your waist and hip and names the size for you.
One rule holds whatever the garment: buy the size you measure. A size down does not shape more. It moves the pressure to the edges, which then dig and roll.
What does waist size say about body shape?
Only something in comparison. A 30 inch waist under a 40 inch bust and hip is a very different outline from the same waist under a 33 and a 34. The body shape calculator takes your bust, waist and hip together and works out which of five shapes the three numbers describe.
Is this the waist measurement doctors use?
Not quite. Health screening measures lower, roughly midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and reads the number against medical thresholds. That conversation belongs with a doctor. This page is about clothes.
The short version
Your waist size is the distance around the narrowest part of your middle, tape level and snug, breath let out. It is usually smaller than your jeans size because jeans sit lower. On a general chart 28 to 30 inches is an S, 30 to 32 an M, 32 to 34 an L, 34 to 36 an XL and 36 to 38 an XXL, and on a boundary the hip decides. For shapewear, measure the hip as well and let the size finder do the reading.
