28A is a real bra size, and an ordinary one: an underbust of 23 to 24 inches with a bust no more than an inch larger. It feels imaginary because most Indian shops do not cut bands below 30, so the size exists in the maths but rarely on the rail.

What does 28A mean?
On the Indian chart the band number comes from the underbust: round it up to an even number, then add four. An underbust of 23 to 24 inches becomes a 28 band. The letter records how much bigger the bust is than that band number, and A covers a difference of zero to one inch.

A is not shorthand for an absence. It is a measured difference like every other letter on the chart, just the smallest one.
On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 24D; EU charts call it a 50D. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is 28A a real bra size?
Yes. The chart produces a 28 band the moment an underbust measures 23 to 24 inches, and plenty of adult women measure exactly that. The measurement is not provisional and not unusual.
What is missing is the stock, not the size. Most Indian brands open their range at a 30 or 32 band, so a correctly measured 28A gets answered with an empty shelf often enough that people start doubting the measurement instead of the shop.
Why is it so hard to buy?
Band ranges are production decisions. A label cuts the sizes it expects to sell most and lets the ends of the chart go, and bands below 30 are usually the first thing to go. There is no anatomy in that, only inventory. The chart keeps going in both directions past the point where shelves stop.
The practical result is familiar to anyone who measures 28A: years spent in 30 and 32 bands that ride up the back, because those were the sizes that existed.
What is the sister size of a 28A?
Sister sizes move the band one step and the letter one step the opposite way; the cup volume stays roughly the same. A cups only get half of this. No letter sits below A, so the band-up sister does not exist, and the whole arrangement reduces to:
28A → 26B
One sister, one band down. And this is where the usual escape hatch fails, because 26 bands are scarcer in India than the 28 you already cannot find. Both directions are closed. In practice:
- Wearing a 30 band because that is what the shop had: expect it to ride up. Fasten it on the tightest hooks from the first day, and if it still lifts at the back, have a tailor take the band in. On most styles that is a small job.
- Cups gaping on that stand-in: the cup was moulded for a fuller bust than yours, so the gap is the size being wrong, not your body. Unlined and stretch-cup styles forgive the mismatch better than rigid moulded ones.
- The maths hands you 26B: treat it as information rather than a shopping list. It is correct, and you will almost never see one on an Indian shelf.
What works when the size is not on the shelf?
Adjust fit rather than hunt labels. A band alteration costs little and fixes the loose-band problem at its source, and styles with three or four hook positions give you more range to work with as the elastic relaxes.
For outfits, think past the bra entirely. Our own strapless adhesive bra starts at 30A, and its smallest cup is moulded for a 30 to 31 inch bust; on a 28A that extra volume defeats the point of a moulded cup, so we will not pretend it is the answer. Medical grade nipple covers are. They are sized by coverage diameter (7.7, 10.2 or 13 cm) rather than by band and cup, so your ribcage measurement never enters the question. The silicone is non-adhesive and holds through gentle contact and body heat, and one pair lasts ten or more wears with basic care. At a zero to one inch difference there is very little weight for a bra to carry, which means coverage is usually the entire job, and covers do coverage under sheer, backless and deep-cut outfits without needing a band anywhere.
