A 36D is a wide band with the largest cup letter most Indian shops carry. At this size the fit advice changes: the band stops being a detail and becomes the thing that decides whether the bra works.

What a 36D measures
Indian sizing takes your underbust, rounds it up to an even number and adds four. A 36 band is cut for someone measuring about 31 to 32 inches underneath.
The letter is the difference between bust and band. D is three to four inches.

On UK and US charts, which use the underbust itself as the band, the same body is a 32F and a US 32G; EU charts call it a 70G. The bra size converter lines up all four systems.
Is 36D bigger than 36C?
Yes, by about an inch of difference between bust and band. Same band, one letter up.
Because the band is identical, the two feel the same around your ribcage. That makes the swap easy to diagnose: if a 36C is comfortable underneath but you are spilling over the top of the cup or the underwire sits on tissue rather than behind it, 36D is the direct fix and nothing else needs to change.
Is 36D or 34D bigger?

The bands differ by two inches, which is the obvious part. The cup differs too, and that is the part people miss. A letter is measured against its own band, so the D on a 36 holds more than the D on a 34. Same letter, bigger cup, every time the band goes up.
Why the band matters more at a D cup
A bra is held up by its band, not its straps. The band carries the weight around your ribcage and the straps mostly stop the cups tipping forward. That does not change with size, but the consequences of getting it wrong do.
At a D cup there is more weight for a loose band to fail to carry, so it transfers to the straps, and the straps transfer it to your shoulders and neck. Sore shoulders, red grooves and a band that has crept up your back by evening are one problem with one cause, and going up a cup letter makes it worse rather than better.
The test takes five seconds. On the loosest hook, pull the band away from your back. If it lifts more than about an inch, it is too loose. A new bra should fit on the loosest hook, so you have the tighter ones to move to as it stretches.
Sister sizes when 36D is close but wrong
Move the band one step and the letter the opposite way:
38C ← 36D → 34E
All three hold a similar volume and differ in band tightness. Every size on the chart has neighbours like these; our sister sizes guide lists the lot.
The rules that matter in a fitting room:
- Band rides up at the back, cup fits: go down to 34E
- Band comfortable, spilling over the top: stay on 36 and go up to 36E
- Band digs in, cup fits: go up to 38C
One caveat that bites at this size. Indian charts run A to F, but most shops stop stocking at D, so both 34E and 36E are correct answers you often cannot buy. When that happens, 38C is the swap that exists, and a firm band matters more than an exact letter. When the outfit takes the band away
Backless blouses, halter necks, deep V necklines and low saree drapes remove the band, the straps, or both, and at a D cup people usually assume that settles it.
It does not, though the margin for sloppy application is smaller:
- A strapless adhesive bra in your cup size sticks to skin and holds shape with no band and no straps. It is made in 36D, the largest size in the range.
- Lift tape can go where a moulded cup cannot, and you control the angle of the lift.
Both depend on skin preparation more than anything else. Clean, completely dry, no moisturiser or oil, and firm pressure along the entire edge rather than the middle. The short version
A 36D fits an underbust of 31 to 32 inches with a bust three to four inches larger. It is the top of most Indian size rails rather than the top of the sizing system, and at this cup the band is what decides whether the bra works. If it rides up, go down a band and up a letter before you touch anything else.
