A racerback bra angles its straps inward to meet between the shoulder blades, in a Y or a V, instead of running straight over each shoulder. The geometry is the whole product: straps that converge at the centre back have no outward path, so they cannot slide off a sloped or narrow shoulder, and they sit well inside the armhole of a sleeveless top.
What does the strap geometry actually do?
A standard strap lies on the slope of your shoulder, and the slope is the problem. Every reach and shrug nudges the strap outward, and outward is downhill; shoulders that slope more, or sit narrower, shed straps faster. The usual fixes, tightening the straps or sliding them inward on their adjusters, fight the geometry without changing it.
A racerback changes it. The straps angle in toward the neck and anchor at the centre of the back, so the direction a strap would slip in no longer leads anywhere. Some of the load pulls inward rather than straight down over the shoulder point, which is part of why sportswear borrowed the shape. And because the straps hug the neck side of the shoulder, the outer shoulder is completely clear: exactly the strip of body a cut-in armhole exposes.
Nothing about the cups changes. A racerback is a strap layout, not a cup style, and it exists wired, non-wired, padded and plain, the same as any other back.
Do racerback bras stop straps falling?
Yes, when the strap itself is the problem: sloped shoulders, narrow shoulders, straps set wide on the frame. The geometry removes the failure rather than resisting it.
No, when the strap is a symptom. A band too big lets the whole bra ride up and drift, and the straps fall as a consequence; converge them and the bra still migrates, just differently. Check the band before crediting or blaming any strap design: level all the way round, firm enough that two flat fingers slide under it and no more. Can you wear a racerback under a regular kurti?
Yes. Under set-in sleeves and a normal back, nothing about a racerback shows, and it wears like any other bra. The geometry only becomes visible, or valuable, at the edges of the outfit:

When to buy one, then: when your wardrobe keeps proving the need. Straps that slip however you adjust them, more sleeveless kurtis than sleeved ones, or sports-adjacent days that mix a commute with stairs and a long walk. One racerback covers all three, and it earns a place in the rotation even when the rest of the drawer is standard.
Why do racerbacks open at the front?
Because the back has no room for hooks. A closure needs a flat band crossing the spine, and on a racerback the centre back is where the straps converge. So the fastening either disappears entirely, in stretch styles you pull on over your head, or moves to the front as a clasp.

What will a racerback not fix?
A digging band. Support comes from the band in every bra design; converging the straps redistributes some strap pressure and changes nothing at the ribcage. Fix the band size first, always.
It is also not automatically a sports bra. Sportswear borrows the racerback shape because it stays put through movement, but a sports bra adds compression and structure that an everyday racerback does not have. The short version
